Tribute: Howard Zinn
The Santa Monica Museum of Art was deeply saddened to learn of Howard Zinn's death.
He was due to speak at SMMoA on Thursday, February 4 at 8 pm about his new documentary, The People Speak.
The event will now become a tribute to Zinn and his remarkable work as a social activist.

Chuck Kauffman
Chuck runs the Alliance for Global Justice [AFGJ] our Non-Profit fiscal sponsor. He and others had traveled to Haiti to meet with other community works. Chuck Kaufman,on his way home from Haiti, was detained and questioned in New York City. Chuck said, “I told them I was in Haiti. They asked what other countries I’ve visited and what I did there. I described a trip to Hiroshima, Japan and swimming with nurse sharks in Belize. They dropped the subject.” Chuck was held for a couple of hours and missed his connecting flight, forcing him to spend the night in New York. Others were also detained.
Mumia abu Jamal:
SCOTUS reversed a prior ruling now allowing prosecutors to appeal a decision requiring a new sentencing trial. This opens Mumia to a potentially fast-moving execution decree. Anti-death penalty activists and Mumia supporters are on watch for decisions requiring extremely quick action and are exploring other legal options (such as a Presidential action) to protect Mumia’s life. FNB supporter, community lawyer, community member of the Haight Ashbury district of San Francisco, a marcher with MLK Jr. in Holtzmen’s youth, a founder of a Haight community group which worked to protect the rights of the homeless poor and disinfrancised from discriminating community members. On or before 2009 Oct 31, Margarito Montes Parra and 14 members of his family and staff, gunned down in Sonora Mexico. High-profile farm-worker organizer, head of the General Popular Union of Workers and Farmers which led squatter protests & agitated for rural land reform by the Mexican government. “This was an attack not just against a union leader but against the work we do... 2009 Dec 26, Dora “Alicia” Sorto Recinos, 8 months pregnant, murdered while carrying her two year old child, in the small community of Trinidad in the department of Cabañas in El Salvador. (The child, who was shot in the leg is receiving medical attention.) A member of the Environmental Committee of Cabañas, Sorto Recinos and her life partner, José Santos Rodríguez, were outspoken opponents of the El Dorado gold mine, which Pacific Rim, a Vancouver, B.C.-based company, is desperate to open despite widespread community and governmental opposition. Other anti-mining activists recently killed in the same community include Ramiro Rivera (gunned down in front of his daughter on Dec 20) and Marcelo Rivera (no relation to Ramiro) who was found tortured and killed, having been disappeared on 2009 Jun 18.

A dedicated activist for 42 years with the Peace and Freedom Party, involved in unions, peace groups, civil rights groups, socialist organizations, and study groups, a national officer in the SDS in the 1960s, a P&F Party primary candidate in California for US President (1984) and for Attorney General (1998).
